Bordeaux had a Merlot crop problem and the best wines are the first growth wines and wines produced on the left bank of the Gironde. It was poor for Red Burgundy and White Burgundy. It was an very poor for the North and South of the Cote du Rhone. In Portugal, there was a tiny crop which produced some very good single Quinta vintage ports. Sweet Rivesaltes wine from the South of France is a good choice for this vintage.

Pre-1995 Glen Garioch was a much different distillery to the one we know now - heavily peated spirit was their predominant output. Glenfarclas is considered by many to be one of the finest distilleries in Speyside. Its direct-fired stills produce a heavy single malt that is almost exclusively matured in Jerez sherry casks. The distillery focuses on single malt over blends, and a cool microclimate around the distillery that means that their casks are particularly stingy to the "angels," resulting in an incredible depth of stock. Glenfarclas also feel they share some credit for the modern day love of cask strength whisky, introducing their acclaimed 105 proof expressions back in 1968.

The 1985 vintage in Bordeaux started with the vines suffering frost damage in winter which was followed by a stormy, cold and wet Spring. Early summer saw violent hailstorms, but after this time the weather improved dramatically for the crucial flowering period. July and August saw hot temperatures with isolated showers. September was one of the hottest and driest on record, which led to good ripening. From September onwards conditions were perfect for a good harvest. It was an outstanding vintage and all appellations produced wines of great complexity and great ageing potential.. 1985 was outstanding for Red Burgundy and very good for White Burgundy. It was an outstanding vintage in the North and South of the Cote du Rhone. In Portugal, there was a very good vintage which produced some very good vintage ports. There was also an outstanding vintage in the Champagne region.
