In Portugal, good wetaher helped produce very good vintage ports. It was a very good vintage for Champagne and a very good vintage in Italy.

Richly honeyed and buttered crumpet nose, with quite fat, ripe fruit and a concentrated dried apricot and lemon peel firmness. Very full, rich, botrytis palate, flooded with unctuous honey and laden with sweet, juicy ripe nectarine and very ripe pear fruit. Delicious balance, with a supporting breadth of toasty, vanillin oak, and good levels of citrus and mineral acidity adding to a classy, very composed finish." Drink now - 2039. 2005 was a successful vintage in Bordeaux with a very dry summer and little rain from May until September when showers revieved the drought. A truely superlative vintage for both left and right bank producers. A vintage for drinkable wines to be consumed in the long term. 2005 was very successful for Red Burgundy and outstanding for White Burgundy. It was an outstanding vintage in the North and South of the Cote du Rhone. In Portugal, there was a small, though high quality crop which produced some good vintage ports. The Champagne region also produced some very good Champagne which is drinking beautifully.

From the very good 2005 vintage and scoring 91/100 Parker points, "The 2005 QUINTA DA GRICHA is impeccably balanced, bright and graceful, with lovely flavors. It is quite charming. In a few months, from the time I tasted it in Portugal to the time I retasted it in the United States, it improved dramatically in the bottle, and fleshed out noticeably, which it needed to do. The tannins are ripe and reasonably well tamed, but the wine does have a backbone and structure. It has a lush first attack, but this continues on with more intensity and penetration, evolving well for hours. It also has a finish that is gripping and lingering, and that becomes more and more intense with air. The mid-palate is well on the elegant side. There were times when the wine seemed a little too elegant and understated for its USA price point (thank the exchange rate problems in large part for that), but the fruit is lovely. It expands in the glass, and the wine is so charming, with a certain Burgundian feel to it, that it is hard to resist. In particular, I really began enjoying a certain red berry note nuance to this wine as it aired out. Give it a couple of hours to wake up and you’ll be more convinced." Drink now - 2040.
