Nose: it’s remarkable that after so many years you stil get the aromatic hint of polished wood up front. It seems so volatile and it’s usually something I’m missing in old bottles. My guess would be Oloroso then. Remarkably, when taken through a coffee filter this shows its heady side, with wood polish, leather and dried fruits (figs, even some raspberry ganache) but the more particles you leave in the glass, the more it shows toffee notes, coffee and Mokatine candy. In any case this is still quite vibrant, and it kept unfolding throughout the evening. Mouth: pretty perfect, albeit perhaps a little soft due to the bottle ageing. There’s plenty of dried fruits, toasted nuts (hazelnut, pecan pie) with subtle burnt caramel and a hint of herbal tea. It seems lightly abocado (with a touch of sweet wine added to it) which isn’t surprising coming from this era, especially when the wine was really old already. There’s quite some acidity to balance this anyway. Stunning wine, with a long finish on dried fruits, a faint bitter touch and this mocha note again. Drink now - 2043. Distresed labels

This Very Rare Old Tres Cortados Sherry was a 250th Anniversary bottlimng to celebrate the 1730-1980 anniversary of Pedro Domecq. It was personally selected by Jose Ignacio Domecq. Only sherry that had been aged for over 50 years and was limited to only 6000 bottles.

Palo Cortado is a unique style of sherry which owes its character in equal parts to human intent and natural intervention. The wine begins it's maturation as a tangy Fino sherry, under a protective flor (layer) of yeast which prevents the wine from oxidising, but then naturally and mysteriously loses this flor and begins to age oxidatively, requiring increased alcoholic fortification. As the wine ages, it requires additional top-ups of grape-alcohol to prevent spoiling; each top-up is marked with a cross on the barrel. History

H.M. the King to Lord Burton at his seat at Rangemore on the 22nd February, 1902, when his Majesty inspected Bass and Co.’s Brewery and pulled over the levers which started a special mash of 400 barrels of extra strong ale, which for fifty years or more will be known as the King’s Ale. While Edward VII was crowned in 1902, it was in August, months after the beer was brewed, and the beer wasn’t done as a tie-in with the coronation. It almost seems like the king popped round to get a brewery tour while visiting his mate for the weekend. Apart from a small release in 1905, most was cellared until the 1911 coronation of George V. The brewery issued some bottles, but the independent bottlers who handled Bass also received casks, and they released the beer as well. Bass monopolised the King’s Ale name, and the others labelled it as Royal Ale it is a much rarer bottle.

On 23rd July 1929 the King's grandson, the Prince of Wales and later Edward VIII, continued the tradition by mashing this special ale at the brewery. The King had visited the brewery in Burton-upon-Trent in 1902 to brew a special "Kings Ale". Unlike his Grandfather, Edward arrived by air and flew back to London on the same day. Quite an exceptional effort for the time!
These bottles were all sealed with red wax, with the Bass logo embossed onto it.The beer was sold in many places and was said to be available up to 1945. It is approx 30cms tall, the level is at the top of the bottle shoulder. We believe that this bottle may be one of the rarer Quart sized bottle releases.
